TOP 10 SAFEST CARS IN INDIA 2020

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

Here is a list of TOP 10 SAFEST CARS IN INDIA 2020. All the Cars I mention here is based on the Global NCAP Rating. So, here we start at Number 10,

10. Renault Duster

Global NCAP Rating: 3/5

Price: 9.99L (ex-showroom Delhi)

The Renault Duster makes its place at number 10 in the Top 10 List. It scored 3 stars for the adult occupant safety (9.0/17) and 2 stars for the child occupant safety. When the Renault Duster was initially launched it had only the driver side Airbag. Also, the variant with no airbag scored 0 in the Global NCAP. Considering the Duster's outgoing model, it is equipped with dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist.

9. Ford Aspire

Global NCAP Rating: 3/5

Price: 5.99L (ex-showroom Delhi)

This Ford Figo based compact sedan scored 3 stars in the Global NCAP rating for the adult occupancy safety (10.49/17). Although, it doesn't have any safety kit such as ABS and seat-belt pre-tensioners as standard. Faults like the excessive movement of the three-year-old dummy’s child seat and lack of Isofix child-seat mounts meant that the Aspire received a 2-star child-occupancy rating (14.22/49). It is a good alternative to the segment leader Maruti Suzuki DZire.

8. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga 3/5

Global NCAP Rating: 3/5

Price: 7.59L (ex-showroom Delhi)

The current-gen Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was able to secure a 3-star rating for adult occupancy (9.25/17). Although Maruti Suzuki is known for its Tin Can made body structures as we saw on Baleno and Swift Facelift. The Maruti Ertiga did manage to secure three stars (25.16/49) for child occupancy. Standard safety kit on the Ertiga includes two airbags, ABS, seat-belt reminders for the front seats, Isofix child-seat mounts at the rear and the now-mandatory rear parking sensors and speed alarms.

7. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Global NCAP Rating: 4/5

Price: 7.34L (ex-showroom Delhi)

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is currently the safest Maruti Suzuki car you can buy right now. However, the SUV only roped in two stars for child occupancy (17.93 out of 49) with the 18-month old dummy in the test suffering injuries to its head and shoulders. The markings for the Isofix anchorages did not meet Global NCAP testing protocols, either. For the adult occupants, Brezza scored (12.51 out of 17). All variants of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza are equipped with two airbags, ABS with EBD, front seat belts with pre-tensioners, a driver’s side seat-belt reminder and Isofix child-seat mounts. The Brezza competes with the recently launched Hyundai Venue.

6. Tata Tigor and Tiago

Global NCAP Rating: 4/5

Price: 4.60L and 5.75L respectively (ex-showroom Delhi)

The Tata twins have scored 4 stars in the Global NCAP Rating. I have placed both Tiago and Tigor in the same place because they both are almost the same expect the dimensions. The Tata Tiago hatchback and Tigor compact sedan were both awarded four stars in the crash tests, managing to score 12.52 out of 17 for adult occupancy. The Tata Tigor and Tiago both also managed a 3-star child occupancy rating (34.15/49) – they were marked down for the lack of Isofix child-seat mounts.

5. Volkswagen Polo

Global NCAP Rating: 4/5

Price: 5.82L (ex-showroom Delhi) Talking about the Safety and excluding the Germans does not sound good. Despite lacking some safety kit available on today’s model such as ABS and seat-belt reminders, the VW Polo with two airbags managed a solid 4-star rating for adult occupant protection (12.54/17) way back in 2014. It also scored three stars for child occupant protection (29.91/49) despite lacking Isofix child-seat mounts (now standard on the hatchback).

4. Mahindra Marazzo

Global NCAP Rating: 4/5

Price: 9.99L (ex-showroom Delhi)

Now, let's talk about the safest MPV in India. The first made-in-India MPV to gain a 4-star rating, the Mahindra Marazzo, performed better than people carriers such as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the now-discontinued Renault Lodgy and Chevrolet Enjoy. The Marazzo MPV scored 12.85 out of 17 in adult safety and 22.22 out of 49 in child occupancy (two stars) thanks to safety kit such as dual front airbags, ABS, a driver’s side seat-belt reminder, front seat-belt pre-tensioners and Isofix anchorages for the rear seats – standard across all variants.

3.Tata Nexon

Global NCAP Rating: 5/5

Price: 6.95L (ex-showroom Delhi)

Yes, I know many of you have seen the Ad saying "Nexon!! India's Safest Car". But at AutoConcepts it secured 3rd Position because of the two cars recently launched which are safer than Nexon. While the Nexon secured four stars (13.56/17) the first time it was crash tested, Tata upgraded all variants of the compact SUV with a seat-belt reminder for the driver and front passenger (which has since become mandatory) and sent it in for Round 2. Nexon’s child-occupancy rating is three stars (25/49). All variants of the Tata Nexon come with two airbags, ABS and Isofix child-seat mounts as standard. Do note that the model tested was the pre-facelift car and it has since been upgraded to meet pedestrian protection norms that will come into effect later, this year.

2. Tata Altroz

Global NCAP Rating: 5/5

Price: 5.29L (ex-showroom Delhi) I am proud to say that Tata is an Indian Brand. Why we are looking towards the Chinese manufacturers despite we have much better than that. Altroz is Tata’s second model to get a 5-star rating for adult occupant protection (16.13/17), the Altroz didn’t score as well on child occupant protection, securing three stars (29/49) as the backrest of the rear seat unlatched in the test and the three-year-old dummy’s head made contact with the interior. Nonetheless, the Tata Altroz ranks as the safest hatchback tested by Global NCAP.

1. Mahindra XUV300

Global NCAP Rating: 5/5

Price: 8.10LL(ex-showroom Delhi)

Now, coming to the winner of the safety measures we have XUV300 here. The safest car in India as rated by Global NCAP is the XUV300. Mahindra’s sub-four-metre SUV was awarded five stars for adult occupancy (scoring 16.42/17) and four stars for child occupant protection (scoring (37.44/49). It subsequently won Global NCAP’s first-ever Safer Choice award.
